Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort

Dominica, Lesser Antilles, East Caribbean

Located on the edge of Dominica’s charming capital city, Roseau and directly facing the waterfront, the historic Fort Young Hotel and Dive Resort is built around the remains of a military fortification dating back to 1699.

The hotel has a laid-back and warm atmosphere, with its elegant colonial architecture, coupled with modern touches. The 100 rooms are comfortable and stylish, with stunning views looking out onto the Caribbean Sea over the mountainous Dominican coast.

Together with various dining options, wine and rum cellar, art gallery, spa and fitness centre, award-winning Dive Centre, infinity pool and roped-off area for sea swimming, The Fort Young Hotel can arrange many unique tours, including a once-in-a-lifetime swimming with whales experience. Dominica is the only country where resident sperm whales can be seen year-round and serves as host to two-thirds of all known whale species visiting the waters, including killer, pilot and humpback whales.

Facilities

Enjoy your stay
The hotel has several dining options to suit all tastes. The Palisades Restaurant offers fine dining in Roseau’s only seaside restaurant. Menus include locally-sourced ingredients straight from nearby farms and, of course, the Caribbean Sea.

Providing daily snacks and drinks, Warner’s Bar allows for relaxing and casual seaside dining with a range of signature cocktails, including the hotel’s legendary rum punch.

Embedded into a historic area of the old fort is the intimate and sunken Museum Café offering local Dominican coffee and freshly baked pastries for guests to enjoy as a dine-in or grab-and-go.

Located within the original fort walls in what was the troops’ barracks the Marquis Bar & Lounge provides a unique and fascinating historic ambiance.

Built within two connected cells, which were once prison cells, the Rum & Wine Cellar offers local rum and wine tastings, along with the hotel’s own ocean-aged rum, which is based on the local “BB Rum” — a unique blend from the extract of the bark of the Richeria-Grandis (locally called Bois Bande) and exotic Caribbean spices.

Dominica is called the ‘nature island’ of the Caribbean for good reason, and boasts a wealth of outdoor adventures, all of which can be arranged by the hotel’s activity desk. You can choose to raft along one of the island’s 365 rivers, hike through the rainforest, Sea Turtle Watching between May and October, where you can spot three of seven globally endangered sea turtle species swimming and nesting along Dominica’s shoreline, bathe in sulphur springs, spot rare parrots while birdwatching, or canyoning within the islands lush rainforest, waterfalls and striking rock structures

Diving

Go diving
Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort is the only all-inclusive property on the island to have an onsite dive operation, offering both shore diving and access to the islands most famous dive sites by boat. Trips depart multiple times a day and ensure maximum comfort thanks to the 2 spacious and comfortable boats, with a capacity of 32 and 19 divers. The fully-stocked dive retail shop, teaching facilities, rental gear room, rinse tanks, camera tables, and outdoor showers are all located dockside for convenient boat access. Tanks are also provided on the dock for shore dives and nitrox fills are available at an additional cost.

Dominica’s volcanic mountainous landscape is mirrored below the water, with shallow coral reef formations falling abruptly into the depths. Reefs are thick with hard and soft corals, sponges, crinoids, sea fans, whips and black coral bushes, together with macro marine life including frogfish, seahorses, jawfish, and trumpetfish, while tuna and jacks dominate the deeper waters.

Many of Dominica’s most renowned sites are located around the southern Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve. This underwater volcanic crater is home to dive sites including Dangleben’s Pinnacles, Scotts Head Drop-off, The Village, and Crater’s Edge. These sites allow divers to reach slightly greater depths and enjoy exciting drift dives. Point Guignard and Swiss Cheese offer stunning swim-throughs while La Sorcière starts shallow but soon plummets to beyond 500-metres.

One of the island’s few shore dives is the famous and unique Champagne Reef. Here, volcanic gases bubble through small fissures in the reef, creating a feeling similar to diving in a glass of champagne.

The name Titou Gorge is Creole and means “Little throat hole”, literally you will swim up the “throat” of the mountain to the waterfall plummeting heavily into the Gorge.

There’s no fun if you don’t get near or take that tour up the stream to experience the gushing, breathtaking enchanted waterfall. This gorge was formed many years ago and is fed by the water from the Fresh Water Lake.

KALINAGO PEOPLE

Kalinago Tour
Approx. 4-5 hours

After departing from your hotel, take a scenic drive towards Kalinago Barana Autê, an incredible cultural and historical site. The Kalinago Barana Autê is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of the Kalinago people, the indigenous inhabitants of Dominica. This unique facility not only offers a deep dive into the culture, history, and traditions of the Kalinago community but also plays a vital role in the region’s socio-economic development. By providing employment, supporting the sale of authentic Kalinago art and crafts, and creating a market for local agricultural produce, it serves as a hub for both cultural preservation and community growth.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a Kalinago tour guide who will present a visual overview of the Kalinago people’s fascinating history. Afterward, embark on a guided tour through the facility, which is set in a traditional village-style environment, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

INDIAN RIVER

Indian River Tour
Half day tour

The Indian River flows to the Caribbean Sea between the town of Portsmouth and the village of Glanvillia. It is the widest river in Dominica and also one of the most picturesque, dominated as it is by the spectacular buttressed Bwa Mang Trees.

The Kalinago (Carib Indian) people used to live along its banks and the river was important to their livelihood, as they used it to transport goods for trade with sailors.

Indian River boat rides are one of the more relaxing tourist attractions of Dominica. Experienced boatmen in hand-oared river boats will take you quietly past many types of wild life and plant life along the swampy river bank. No trip up the river is complete without a stop at the famous ‘Bush Bar’ to sample their delicious rum punch!

TI KWEN GLO CHO

Ti Kwen Glo Cho
Half day tour

Dominica is a volcanic island which births a myriad of wonders, from sulphur springs to ocean floor vents and boiling lakes. Ti Kwen is one of these. There are quite a few hot springs on the island, but Ti Kwen is by far one of the best ways to experience the healing thermal waters of the island.

A quaint family establishment, the hospitality at Ti Kwen makes the springs even more of a remarkable experience. The lush gardens complement the stone pools and refreshing fruit juices from the bar are a well needed thirst quencher after a hot soak.

MIDDLEHAM FALLS

Middleham Falls
Half day tour

Middleham Falls is Dominica’s tallest waterfall, with a cascade of almost 200 feet dropping into a beautiful swimming hole at the bottom.

The approximately 1.1 mile route to Middleham Falls begins at the small parking area with pavilion and bathrooms. The entire trail is through tropical rainforest, with several intermediate climbs and descents. The trail is generally well-maintained, with numerous stair-steps and hand-rails, but some sections have lots of roots to contend with. This can be a muddy trek after rains, but it is worth every step of the way through the beautiful rainforest to the exhilarating falls.
